The Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep Connection Inside NAU Football

#38 Taylor Malenfant wears the phrase “Get After It!” on his back-flap during practice as a tribute to his high school coach, the late Scot Bemis.

Three Lumberjacks, Taylor Malenfant, Andy Wilder, and Ryan Reardon, all share a special connection having played together at Notre Dame Prep High School in Scottsdale, AZ. Their paths have again crossed on the football field, but this time in Flagstaff, AZ and at NAU. All three are linked together off and on the field as Wilder is a kicker/punter who punts to Malenfant who returns punts and plays safety. Malenfant’s duties at safety place him in the defensive secondary right behind linebacker Ryan Reardon.

In the video below, Malenfant, Wilder, and Reardon discuss their relationship, what it is like playing together at NAU, their relationship with the late and very influential Coach Scot Bemis, and their new home in Flagstaff, AZ and NAU.

Lumberjacks Continue Double Day Practices with a Focus on High Intensity and Competition

On Saturday, August 20th, the Lumberjacks completed their fourth day of double day practices with another round of morning and evening practices. After the scrimmage on Friday and an upcoming day off from practices on Sunday, the Lumberjacks made it a priority to get the most out of the two practices scheduled for Saturday. They got that, and then some. The morning practice featured individual drills which stressed fundamentals, and one on one competitive drills between offensive and defensive lineman, between wide receivers, tight ends, and defensive backs, and also between running backs and linebackers. These competitive drills were up-tempo and set the stage for the two team sessions of the morning practice. The evening practice focused more on individual positions and fundamentals while wrapping up with a team scrimmage review. The Jacks are off of the practice field tomorrow but will continue workouts, film sessions, and meetings throughout the day. The coaching staff and select players will be participating in the annual Wine and Dine event sponsored by the NAU Athletic Department. More information about the event can be found here.

Enjoy the pictures from Saturday’s practices! As always more pictures can be found on the NAU Football Flickr page. There is a link to the Flickr page on the upper right hand portion of the home page of this website. You can also click here.

Also, for those of you who have attended practices, you have probably noticed two people taking pictures around the various drills. One of those is me, and the other is the great Rick Johnson. Rick is an excellent photographer and has taught me so much in the short amount of time I have known him. However, Rick will be moving to Prague for the upcoming academic year with his wife who is a faculty member at NAU. I wanted to take this time to wish Rick and his wife the best this upcoming and year and safe travels abroad! For those of you who are interested and have Facebook, here is a link to his photos. I believe you have to be logged into Facebook to see the photos. Also, I am unsure of his privacy settings, so if you have any issues seeing the photos let me know and we will fix it.

Hit of the Day goes to Coach Charles Huff. As Daniel Adler streaked down the sideline, Coach Huff continued to coach his cornerback and as Adler looked back for the football, he ran right into Coach Huff. Coach Huff still has a little bit of hitting power left from his NFL days. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the "collision."

NAU Fall Football Camp: Day 7

Day seven of NAU’s fall football camp featured some big hits on defense and some impressive runs by the Jacks’ new freshmen running backs. The team practiced in the Skydome today with a standard two-hour practice. The offense and defense had a live exchange at the end of practice. The defense held the No. 1 offense in check most of the time. Senior defensive end Brandon Vance recorded two sacks. However, the offense had two big runs, including a 50-yard touchdown run by Jonathan DeWitt. Later on, freshman Zach Bauman rumbled into the end zone as well.

Bauman had a solid day, but he did find himself on the losing end of this big hit by Taylor Malenfant and Blayne Anderson.

NAU Player Profile: Taylor Malenfant

Taylor Malenfant isn’t afraid of much. Whether it’s delivering big hits from his safety position or riding a motorcycle, Malenfant competes with everything he has. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound sophomore from Scottsdale contributed on special teams last year, but hopes to play a bigger role on defense this fall. He’s fast and strong and is slowly getting better each day.

But Malenfant hasn’t been without setbacks. He broke his back as a junior, which forced him to quit his favorite hobby, motocross racing. Malenfant is healthy this fall and hopes to contribute in any way he can.

Hobby: Training and hunting

Favorite dessert: Ice cream cake

Favorite Athlete: Adrian Wilson

Hidden Talent: Used to race motocross competitively

Greatest Sports Moment: Winning the state football title my senior year after coming back from a broken back.

Best thing about being a Lumberjack football player: Just being able to be in the mountains and away from the valley. I like everyone here and we have a lot of camaraderie.
