Quick Tour of the Renovated Skydome

As most are well aware since the end of the 2010 football season the Skydome on the campus of Northern Arizona University has undergone a $25 million renovation project. How does a facility that houses sporting events year round undergo a facelift? Well, that is a very tricky question. Football offices were moved to temporary modules while hosting spring practices at nearby Sinagua Middle School. Men’s and Women’s Basketball played their entire seasons in the Rolle Activity Center. Track & Field hosted indoor events on the dome floor during the construction and facelift of the stands, offices, concourse, & press box. Perhaps the transition that effected the NAU Athletic Department the most was that of the weight room. The weight room which was used by all of NAU’s intercollegiate sports had to be moved out of the dome to a site off of campus and with much more limited space.

However, in seven short months the Skydome facility team and Barton Malow (the construction company overseeing the project) have nearly fully renovated the dome and made it functional for daily practice by the NAU Lumberjack football team and not to mention the Arizona Cardinals during their annual training camp in Flagstaff. When finished, the renovated Skydome will be one of the premier facilities in the Big Sky Conference.

While the dome is not completely done, it is getting CLOSE, and needless to say people around NAU can not wait. The dome will be ready for the home opener on September 10th, against Ft. Lewis College, and the Skydome facility team and Barton Malow deserve a great amount of respect and thanks for making the dome available so quickly.

While most of the public will have to wait until September 10th to get inside the Skydome and get their first view of the final product, you can get a quick sneak peak preview of some of the facilities that have been fully refinished. Enjoy!
