NAU Football Players of the Week vs Idaho State

During NAU’s 50-10 win this past weekend over Idaho State there were a few individual performances that stood out. The NAU Football coaching staff recognized the following players as Players of the Week against Idaho State:

Co-Offensive Players of the Week:

Nick Cole, Junior Wide Receiver, Concord, CA

Cole has proven to be a reliable target for Quarterback Cary Grossart all season long and caught a team high six passes for 84 yards against Idaho State.

Dejzon Walker, Sophomore Wide Receiver, Chandler, AZ

Dejzon “Mustard” Walker caught four passes for 74 yards including an 11 yard touchdown catch and a 50 yard reception on the first play of the game.

 

Blocking “Bone” of the Week

Austin Shanks, Senior Wide Receiver, Pacoima, CA

Shanks, who is mostly known for what he does with the football, earned the blocking bone of the week against Idaho State for what he did when he didn’t have the football. Shanks provided several important blocks that extended a number of runs in the second half.

Defensive Player of the Week

Jarret Bilbrey, Senior Defensive End, San Diego, CA

Bilbrey had an outstanding day for the Lumberajacks as he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown and registered two sacks against the Bengals.

Co-Special Teams Players of the Week

Hayden Renning, Sophomore Long Snapper, Flagstaff, AZ

Andy Bachelier, Sophomore, Long Snapper/Holder, Rio Rico, AZ

While Renning and Bachelier are not going to light up any stat sheet as the long snapper and holder connection on kicks, they have done a terrific job all season and were finally recognized for the steady performance.

Defensive Scout Team Player of the Week

Chase Wilsey, Freshman Linebacker

Wilsey moved from linebacker to safety this week and provided the NAU offense with consistent looks of Idaho State’s secondary.

Offensive Scout Team Player of the Week
Dre Bookman, Freshman Wide Receiver

Bookman had the tough task of emulating ISU’s dangerous receiver Rodrick Rumble and did an excellent job.

NAU Football Players of the Week vs Northern Colorado

During NAU Football’s 12-10 win over Northern Colorado this past weekend, there were a few individual performances that stood out. The NAU Football coaches recognized the following players as players of the week:

Offensive Player of the WeekDrew Emanuel – Tight End, Junior, Mesa, AZ

Junior Tight End Drew Emanuel had only three catches for 33 yards against Northern Colorado but it was his clutch third down catch to extend a drive and his numerous critical blocks on run plays that earned him this weeks offensive player of the week award.

Blocking “Bone” of the WeekJesse Brantley – Wide Receiver, Junior, Gilbert, AZ

The “bone” award is an award that goes to the offensive skill player who had the best game blocking. On Saturday against Northern Colorado, junior receiver Jesse Brantley provided several key blocks on running plays on the perimeter.

Defensive Scout Team Player of the WeekLouis Collins, Cornerback, Red Shirt Freshman, Los Angeles, CA

Collins did an excellent job during the week imitating Northern Colorado’s impact players in the secondary.

Defensive Player of the WeekMike Dosen – Safety, Junior, Pittsburg, CA

Junior safety Mike Dosen recorded two tackles against Northern Colorado and a crucial 59 yard interception return for a touchdown during the second quarter.  Dosen’s interception was his second of the season, and the only touchdown on the afternoon for the Lumberjacks.

Offensive Scout Team Player of the WeekBrandon Babineaux, Wide Receiver, Junior, Folsom, CA

Brandon Babineaux had the task of imitating Northern Colorado’s talented receivers for the NAU defense and did an excellent job throughout the week.

Special Teams Player of the WeekAndy Wilder, Kicker, Junior, Scottsdale, AZ

Andy Wilder nailed his second game-winning field goal of the season on Saturday with fifteen seconds remaining in the Lumberjacks 12-10 victory over Northern Colorado. Wilder also punted seven times on the afternoon averaging 44.3 yards per punt with two of those being downed inside the opponents 20 yard line.

NAU Football Players of the Week vs Ft. Lewis

There were many standout performers from Saturday’s 69-0 victory over Ft. Lewis however, the following players were honored as players of the week:
Offensive Player of the Week – Trey Gilleo – Senior -  Kingman, AZ

- Trey was instrumental in clearing holes for NAU running backs to rush through as the team rushed for 346 yards and provided excellent protection as the Lumberjacks passed for 211 yards and allowed zero sacks.

 

Defensive Player of the Week – Blair Wishom – Junior – Antioch, CA

- Wishom provided excellent coverage and support in the secondary as he tallied four tackles and an interception that he returned for 45 yards. He was a large part of the Lumberjacks defensive effort that held Ft. Lewis to 122 total offensive yards and pitched a shutout.

 

Special Teams Player of the Week – Austin Shanks – Senior – Pacoima, CA

- Shanks had a punt return for a touchdown for the second straight week and averaged over 50 yards per punt return on the day.

 

Offensive Scout Team Player of the Week – Mike Massey – Freshman – Litchfield Park, AZ

- Massey gave the starting offense an excellent look as the field side cornerback.

 

Defensive Scout Team Player of the Week – Leroy Guenther – Freshman – Wickenburg, AZ

- Guenther gave the starting defense consistent looks on the offensive line.

Jacks Get Much Needed, Hard Fought Victory at Sacramento State

On Saturday, October 29, 2011, the NAU Lumberjacks faced the Sacramento State Hornets in Sacramento and came out with a hard fought victory with the final score being 27-26. The win reflected a total team effort from the offense, defense, and special teams with each group stepping up when needed. More information about the game can be found here. Offensive Player of the Week: Zach Bauman – 38 carries for 246 yards and 2 TD’s

Defensive Player of the Week: Mike Dosen – 1 Interception, 1 Pass Breakup, and 5 Tackles

Special Teams Players of the Week – Blayne Adnerson & Dan Pela – 1 Blocked PAT Each

Offensive Scout Team Player of the Week – Jayson Allmond

Defensive Scout Team Players of the Week – Hayden Renning & Zack Williams

Lumberjacks Stymie Top Passing Offense in FCS

On Saturday the Idaho State Bengals brought the nation’s top passing offense in the Football Championship Subdivision (1-AA) to Flagstaff. The Lumberjack defense knew they had to step up in order to come out of the game with a victory. They did just that, and then some. The NAU defense controlled the afternoon holding Idaho State to 171 yards passing while racking up 10 sacks. The Bengals came into the contest averaging 394 passing yards per game.

The offense also had a big afternoon while demonstrating their explosiveness and big play capability. Zach Bauman scored on a 59 yard run while totaling 219 yards rushing. Giovannie Dixon also added a 60 yard touchdown run while averaging over 10 yards a carry. As a team the Lumberjacks racked up 336 yards rushing and over 480 yards of total offense.
