NAU Football Players of the Week vs Idaho State

During NAU’s 50-10 win this past weekend over Idaho State there were a few individual performances that stood out. The NAU Football coaching staff recognized the following players as Players of the Week against Idaho State:

Co-Offensive Players of the Week:

Nick Cole, Junior Wide Receiver, Concord, CA

Cole has proven to be a reliable target for Quarterback Cary Grossart all season long and caught a team high six passes for 84 yards against Idaho State.

Dejzon Walker, Sophomore Wide Receiver, Chandler, AZ

Dejzon “Mustard” Walker caught four passes for 74 yards including an 11 yard touchdown catch and a 50 yard reception on the first play of the game.

Blocking “Bone” of the Week

Austin Shanks, Senior Wide Receiver, Pacoima, CA

Shanks, who is mostly known for what he does with the football, earned the blocking bone of the week against Idaho State for what he did when he didn’t have the football. Shanks provided several important blocks that extended a number of runs in the second half.

Defensive Player of the Week

Jarret Bilbrey, Senior Defensive End, San Diego, CA

Bilbrey had an outstanding day for the Lumberajacks as he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown and registered two sacks against the Bengals.

Co-Special Teams Players of the Week

Hayden Renning, Sophomore Long Snapper, Flagstaff, AZ

Andy Bachelier, Sophomore, Long Snapper/Holder, Rio Rico, AZ

While Renning and Bachelier are not going to light up any stat sheet as the long snapper and holder connection on kicks, they have done a terrific job all season and were finally recognized for the steady performance.

Defensive Scout Team Player of the Week

Chase Wilsey, Freshman Linebacker

Wilsey moved from linebacker to safety this week and provided the NAU offense with consistent looks of Idaho State’s secondary.

Offensive Scout Team Player of the Week
Dre Bookman, Freshman Wide Receiver

Bookman had the tough task of emulating ISU’s dangerous receiver Rodrick Rumble and did an excellent job.

Fall Camp Practice 11 & 12 Report

Sunday was another scheduled double day practice for the Lumberjacks, however the morning practice was changed to  a walk-through as a reward for the hard work the team has been demonstrating during camp. The evening practice was a half-pack (shell) affair with only helmets and shoulder pads. However, just because the practice was not full pads, does not mean the intensity was not there. The practice was a spirited and competitive one as it featured an emphasis on red zone offense and defense and included both 1 on 1 and team sessions emphasizing the red zone situations, with some special teams work mixed in. Offensive players who performed highly on Sunday were receivers Nick Cole and Austin Shanks and offensive lineman Matt Wilson. Defenses’ top performers included defensive tackle Marc Thompson, linebacker Craig Frum, and safety Lucky Dozier.

Monday is an off day from practice for the Jacks as they will be consumed with meetings and working out in the weight room. The Lumberjacks return to the field on Tuesday for another double day with the morning session starting at 10:30 AM and the evening practice starting at 6:00 PM. The evening practice will feature NAU’s Football Season Ticket Select A Seat event. For more information about this event, click here.

Fall Camp Practice Four Report

Lightening from monsoons again forced the Lumberjacks to practice inside the dome on Monday afternoon. Fall camp practices in August are usually scheduled for the morning to offset the afternoon monsoons, however with training camp starting much earlier this year, the schedule had to be adjusted to accommodate student-athletes who are currently enrolled in summer classes. The practice started with some special teams drill work, immediately followed by an up-tempo, competitive team session between the offense and defense which helped set the tone for the practice. The practice proved to be highly competitive featuring the season’s first 1-on-1 drills amongst wide receivers/tight ends/ running backs and linebackers/defensive backs. During both the team and 7-on-7 sessions receivers Nick Cole and Brandon Babineaux made a number of impressive down-field catches. On the defensive side, safety Lucky Dozier recorded an interception, corner Anders Battle batted down a few passes, and the defensive line as a unit impacted a number of plays. After the team periods, the PAT-Field Goal unit practiced some 40+ yard kicks with the pressure of crowd noised provided by their teammates. True freshman kicker Brian Drulias ended the practice by nailing three straight field goals. The Jacks are back on the field (or in the dome) tomorrow (Tuesday) at 2:00 pm, and in FULL PADS for the first time in the 2012 campaign.
