One Week Down – NAU Spring Practice

One week down, four more to go.

The NAU football team practiced Saturday under warm, sunny skies. It was the first day the team had practiced in full pads. While there were some hiccups at times, Coach Souers felt the team made some strides from earlier in the week. The Jacks will practice at 4 pm on Tuesday at Sinagua Middle School. The team will keep the same Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday schedule as last week. However, the next week we will practice Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. On Saturday, the staff will participate in the Lumberjack Golf Classic at Seven Canyons Golf Course in Sedona. If you are interested in playing, let me know or sign up online at this link. Below are a few new photos. We posted 36 new pictures in the Flickr Gallery.

NAU-ISU Football Photos Up

The Jacks defeated the Bengals yesterday 32-7 and dominated in almost every facet of the game. There was a large crowd on hand for ISU’s homecoming, but it was silenced for most of the afternoon as the Lumberjacks played very well from start to finish. Some highlights from the game included Mike Czyz’s touchdown catch over the middle in the first half; Matt Estrada’s surprising HUGE hit on a Bengal player who was covering a punt; (Estrada was the punt returner and didn’t want to catch the ball since it was inside the 15 yard line and as a result he went looking to block one of the ISU players. Needless to say, he hit the player so hard his helmet flew off!) Zach Bauman’s goal line score; Isaac Bond’s safety; Taylor Julio’s pick in the end zone; Estrada’s leaping interception; Taylor Patton’s nice tackle on kickoff; Anthony Llanos’s sack. It was a great day for the whole team. See the Players of the Week above.

Here are some photos from Saturday’s game. If you are interested in prints, please let us know!

NAU Football Fall Camp: Day 4

Temperatures were a bit warmer this morning for NAU’s fourth practice of fall camp, but it didn’t seem to effect the team all that much. Most of practice consisted of installing a few more plays, individual drills, and working on special teams. The defense played well in 7-on-7 drills, knocking down several passes and picking off one. However, the offense came back in the final team period and connected on a two deep passes — one to Mike Czyz for a touchdown, and another to Ca’leve DeBoskie.

The Jacks will practice in full pads tomorrow at 11 am on the east campus fields. Practices are open to the public. Below is a photo progression of senior linebacker Cody Dowd’s interception in 7-on-7 today. Go Jacks!

NAU Fall Camp: Practice No. 2

Mike Czyz makes a nice grab Wednesday.

The NAU football team took the field outside for the first time this fall and was met with picture-perfect, sunny weather. The Lumberjacks began their non-contact practice in the late morning just after the Arizona Cardinals left the field. The offense and defense concentrated mostly on fundamentals and individual drills while integrating and installing the basics of their schemes.

The defense flew around and overall had a good day. The offense also looked sharp most of the morning. Freshman Iffy Umodu made a spectacular catch during the 7-on-7 session. (He also made a one-handed grab last night in practice.) The team continues to work in the new freshmen and get them acclimated to their new surroundings and a new system.

The Lumberjacks continue with meetings tonight and practice tomorrow at 11 am.
