Lumberjacks Stymie Top Passing Offense in FCS

On Saturday the Idaho State Bengals brought the nation’s top passing offense in the Football Championship Subdivision (1-AA) to Flagstaff. The Lumberjack defense knew they had to step up in order to come out of the game with a victory. They did just that, and then some. The NAU defense controlled the afternoon holding Idaho State to 171 yards passing while racking up 10 sacks. The Bengals came into the contest averaging 394 passing yards per game.

The offense also had a big afternoon while demonstrating their explosiveness and big play capability. Zach Bauman scored on a 59 yard run while totaling 219 yards rushing. Giovannie Dixon also added a 60 yard touchdown run while averaging over 10 yards a carry. As a team the Lumberjacks racked up 336 yards rushing and over 480 yards of total offense.

New Photos from University of Arizona Now Up

New photos from the U of A game are now up on the Flickr account. There is a quick link to these on the right hand side of this page. As for the game itself, NAU played hard in the first half, and went into the locker room with the momentum and a small 14-10 deficit at half. The Jacks came out and held the Wildcats to a three and out on the first possession of the second half. However, after getting the ball from the Cats, the Jacks committed a costly turnover deep inside their own end, which led to a quick score for Arizona. After all was said and done the final was 41-10 in favor of the Wildcats. The Lumberjacks took many positives from the game, which they hope to build on, and hope to pull out their first victory of the season this coming Saturday against the Ft. Lewis Skyhawks. Saturday, September 10th, is also the reopening of the Skydome, and Football Alumni Weekend. Be sure to get your tickets soon because they will go fast!

The Players of the Week for the Arizona game were:

OFF Player of the Week: Zach Bauman

DEF Player of the Week: Isaac Bond

Special Teams Player of the Week: Blake Bailey

Offensive Scout Team Player of the Week: Scout Team Quarterbacks

Defensive Scout Team Player of the Week: Zach McDonnell (Defensive End)

See you on Saturday in the dome!

NAU-ISU Football Photos Up

The Jacks defeated the Bengals yesterday 32-7 and dominated in almost every facet of the game. There was a large crowd on hand for ISU’s homecoming, but it was silenced for most of the afternoon as the Lumberjacks played very well from start to finish. Some highlights from the game included Mike Czyz’s touchdown catch over the middle in the first half; Matt Estrada’s surprising HUGE hit on a Bengal player who was covering a punt; (Estrada was the punt returner and didn’t want to catch the ball since it was inside the 15 yard line and as a result he went looking to block one of the ISU players. Needless to say, he hit the player so hard his helmet flew off!) Zach Bauman’s goal line score; Isaac Bond’s safety; Taylor Julio’s pick in the end zone; Estrada’s leaping interception; Taylor Patton’s nice tackle on kickoff; Anthony Llanos’s sack. It was a great day for the whole team. See the Players of the Week above.

Here are some photos from Saturday’s game. If you are interested in prints, please let us know!

NAU Friday Pep Rally Downtown Flagstaff

The NAU football team concluded the 2010 fall camp by heading downtown to participate in the NAU Fall Sports Pep Rally held in Heritage Square. Despite rainy conditions and cold weather, a good crowd turned out to see the Lumberjack fall teams. Andre Lucciano introduced his two-time defending Big Sky champion women’s soccer team. The NAU marching band played before showcasing the football team, which performed their pre-game ritual dance, the Haka. It was a great way to end two and a half weeks of hard practicing. The Jacks are busy today preparing for Western New Mexico. NAU will face Western on Thursday at 7 pm in the Skydome.

Our players get fired up at the rally.
