Jacks Complete Third Preseason Scrimmage; Wrap up Camp

On Wednesday night the Lumberjacks completed their third and final intra-squad scrimmage of the preseason and the final practice of camp before preparation for Arizona State begins on Friday. The scrimmage provided yet another opportunity for the defense to flex its muscles and demonstrate it’s physicality. Senior cornerback Devin Willis made some nice plays, including one hit in particular that brought some “ooh’s” and “ahh’s” from the team and the crowd. Also, sophomore cornerback Blake Bailey made some good plays on passes and runs his direction. Most of the starters on the evening saw limited reps, which allowed some of the reserves and role players to demonstrate their talents. Junior running back Daniel Pipkin impressed on a few carries, along with some of the young players on the offensive line.  Also, Junior kicker Andy Wilder nailed a pair of long, booming field goals. The scrimmage overall was a lot cleaner than the previous two featuring less penalties and less turnovers, and resulted in only a couple minor injuries.

The Lumberjacks have tomorrow off from practice, and will officially close out fall camp with the team talent show tomorrow evening. Be sure to check back here for highlights of the talent show!

Second Practice Report

The Lumberjacks held their second practice of the 2012 campaign on Saturday morning under sunny skies for the most part. Although clouds eventually rolled in and, the team session was cut slightly short by lightening, the Jacks got in some much needed work, and continue to improve. Today’s practice was the second of the five day acclimation period and again featured only helmets.  The practice started with a punt period where Junior Andy Wilder demonstrated his kicking power with some beautiful high, hanging punts. After some unit work together for each the offense and defense and another special teams unit, the skill players on offense and defense faced off during some 7-0n-7 passing drills. While the results of the drills were mostly balanced, the emphasis was on the basics and fundamentals. However sophomore cornerback Blake Bailey did make a couple of nice plays during the session. To end the practice, the offense and defense faced each other in a team setting for the first time in camp. Coach Souers was pleased overall with the practice  stating, “We showed great improvement over the first practice, and I am impressed at the rate the new guys we have brought in are picking up the playbooks. Although we still have a long way to go before we are ready to step on the field for real, we’ve got a great start. We just need to keep building on it.” The Jacks are back on the practice fields again on Sunday at 10:45 am and will be in the helmets and shoulder pads for the first time this season.

New Photos from University of Arizona Now Up

New photos from the U of A game are now up on the Flickr account. There is a quick link to these on the right hand side of this page. As for the game itself, NAU played hard in the first half, and went into the locker room with the momentum and a small 14-10 deficit at half. The Jacks came out and held the Wildcats to a three and out on the first possession of the second half. However, after getting the ball from the Cats, the Jacks committed a costly turnover deep inside their own end, which led to a quick score for Arizona. After all was said and done the final was 41-10 in favor of the Wildcats. The Lumberjacks took many positives from the game, which they hope to build on, and hope to pull out their first victory of the season this coming Saturday against the Ft. Lewis Skyhawks. Saturday, September 10th, is also the reopening of the Skydome, and Football Alumni Weekend. Be sure to get your tickets soon because they will go fast!
