On Friday October 11th and Saturday October 12th the NAU Lumberjacks traveled to Sacramento, CA to take on the Sacramento State Hornets for a Big Sky Conference match up. The Lumberjacks needed a victory after dropping the previous contest against Montana State. NAU came out firing and went up early in the first quarter 14-3. After that, Sacramento State reeled off 28 unanswered points to put the Lumberjacks in a 31-14, 17 point hole. The Lumberjacks turned to junior quarterback Chase Cartwright who rallied the offense to climb back in the game and eventually take a 39-38 lead which would prove to be the final score. Cartwright finished 16 of 19 for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Senior running back Zach Bauman had 27 carries for 196 yards and two touchdowns. The defense was paced by linebacker Austin Hasquet who tallied 10 total tackles and Lucky Dozier who tallied two eight total tackles and a key interception in the fourth quarter. Next Saturday the Lumberjacks return to Flagstaff to host the Idaho State Bengals for homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
On Saturday, NAU earned a hard fought victory against the University of South Dakota Coyotes. NAU held on for the victory with a final score of 22-16. For NAU, it was an all around team effort as the defense produced an interception return for a touchdown by Senior corner Anders Battle along with one rushing touchdown by Zach Bauman and a receiving touchdown by Dejzon Walker. NAU took on the University of Arizona Wildcats on Friday night (August 30th) down in Tucson. It was the 13th match-up in history between the two schools and NAU went into the game feeling very confident. NAU finished the 2012 season 8-3 and have 19 starters returning for the 2013 season.
On Friday night, the Jacks trailed Arizona only 14-0 at half, however some costly mistakes in the second half cost the Jacks as the final would prove to be 35-0. The Lumberjacks have a bye next week (9/7) and then travel to Davis, California to take on the Aggies of UC Davis in a non-conference contest.
The Lumberjacks returned to the field on Thursday for another practice featuring only helmets and no pads. Both offense and defense continued with installing plays, concepts, and schemes, while focusing on teaching and practice fundamentals. The Lumberjacks third practice of the spring will be Saturday from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon on the practice fields across San Francisco Street from the Skydome.
